The government welcomed the settlement of U.S.-Iran end-of-war talks and expressed hopes for the prompt resumption of safe operations for Korea's ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on the 15th that it "welcomes the conclusion of negotiations between the United States and Iran and the significant progress made toward restoring stability and peace in the region."
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added, "We highly value U.S. President Donald Trump's leadership in bringing this agreement to fruition, as well as the diplomatic efforts of the negotiating parties and related countries."
The statement said, "We expect that thorough implementation of this agreement by the relevant parties and the conclusion of additional negotiations will provide a turning point for resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, and that sustainable peace and stability in the region will be restored as soon as possible."
In particular, the government focused on normalizing navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, "We hope that all vessels, including Korea's ships and seafarers who have faced restrictions on navigation, will be able to promptly resume safe operations."
It added, "We will continue to work with the international community, including the United States, to ensure that free navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is continuously guaranteed."
Earlier, on the 14th (local time), President Trump said on his social media that "the agreement with Iran has been finalized," and announced that he had approved opening the Strait of Hormuz and lifting the U.S. Navy's maritime blockade. Iran also declared the end of military operations, aligning with the end-of-war agreement.
