The presidential office said on the 14th that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a consistent goal of the international community, responding to North Korea's criticism of the South Korea-U.S. Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) meeting and its claim that denuclearization is a closed matter.
In a statement the same day, the presidential office said, "The government is working to realize a Korean Peninsula without war and nuclear weapons under a vision of peaceful coexistence and shared growth," and emphasized, "Denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is a consistent goal of the international community, confirmed by multiple U.N. Security Council resolutions."
It added, "South Korea-U.S. extended deterrence cooperation is a responsible government duty to protect the people's lives and safety," and said, "This fully aligns with the international nonproliferation regime and norms, including the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT)."
Earlier, a Spokesperson for North Korea's Foreign Ministry, in a statement the same day, criticized the recent South Korea-U.S. Nuclear Consultative Group meeting and claimed, "Denuclearization is an irrevocably closed matter."
South Korea and the United States held the sixth Nuclear Consultative Group meeting in Seoul on the 11th and reaffirmed that North Korea's denuclearization is a shared goal.
