Floor leader Jeong Jeom-sik of the People Power Party, ahead of negotiations with the Democratic Party of Korea on forming the National Assembly leadership, set as a goal securing the chair of The National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee and key economy-related standing committee chairs. Jeong stressed that reclaiming the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chair, which the opposition has customarily held, is essential to revive a National Assembly of checks and balances.
On the morning of the 12th at the National Assembly, Jeong held his first press briefing since taking office and, regarding talks to form the latter half of the 22nd National Assembly, said, "Ending the legislative dictatorship continued under the Legislation and Judiciary Committee chairs Jung Chung-rae and Choo Mi-ae, and normalizing the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, is the very element essential to revive a National Assembly of checks and balances."
Jeong also said, "Through the June 3 local elections, public sentiment confirming judgment on the Lee Jae-myung administration's economic mismanagement—marked by the 'three highs' of high exchange rates, high inflation, and high interest rates, and instability in the real estate market—was made clear," adding, "To lead a shift in the stance of economic and real estate policy, the opposition must take the key economy-related standing committees of the Finance and Economy Committee, the National Policy Committee, the Trade. Industry Energy. SMEs. and Startups Committee, and the Land Infrastructure and Transport Committee."
Meeting reporters right after the press conference, Jeong said of the goals for the leadership-formation talks, "Basically, allocation of standing committee chairs follows the number of seats," but added, "We must secure key economy-related standing committees such as the Legislation and Judiciary Committee, the National Policy Committee, and the industry committee to enable checks on the government's economic policy."
In the first half of the 22nd National Assembly, the Democratic Party of Korea held the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and the land committee, while the People Power Party held the chairs of the finance and economy, National Policy Committee, and industry committees. Standing committee chairs can lead agenda submissions and review schedules.
