Rep. Jeong Jeom-sik was elected as the new floor leader of the People Power Party. A three-term lawmaker from Yeongnam and a former public security prosecutor, he is both a pro-Yoon figure and a member of the pro-leadership faction that supports Jang Dong-hyeok.
On the 10th, the People Power Party held a general meeting of lawmakers at the National Assembly and conducted a vote to choose a new floor leader. Yoo Sang-bum, chair of the People Power Party's floor leader election management committee, said, "Out of a total of 103 votes, candidate Kim Do-eup received 48 and candidate Jeong Jeom-sik received 55, so candidate Jeong was elected floor leader."
In the first round of the floor leader election that day, three candidates, including Seong Il-jong, competed, and without a majority it went to a runoff. Excluding third-place Seong, the first- and second-place candidates faced off, and Jeong Jeom-sik was elected by a margin of seven votes.
The new floor leader Jeong is a public security specialist who served as head of Public Security Divisions 1 and 2 at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, chief of Public Security Division 1, deputy chief prosecutor No. 2 at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office, and head of the public security bureau at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office. He indicted Seoul National University professor Song Du-yul in custody and played a leading role in petitioning for the dissolution of the Unified Progressive Party.
He entered the National Assembly in the 2019 Tongyeong-Goseong by-election in South Gyeongsang and went on to win three consecutive terms through the 22nd. During former President Yoon Suk-yeol's tenure, he served as a member of the party's emergency leadership committee and as policy committee chair, and he had close ties with the former president, who even called him "Jeong Gong." In January this year, when Rep. Kim Do-eup stepped down as policy committee chair, he took over as successor and threw his support behind the Jang Dong-hyeok leadership.
Floor leader Jeong said, "I will take more deeply to heart the meaning of the votes cast for Rep. Kim and Rep. Seong."
