Democratic Party of Korea candidate Park Soo-hyun defeated incumbent People Power Party candidate Kim Tae-heum to win the South Chungcheong governorship in the June 3 local elections.
Park, a former two-term lawmaker, first entered the National Assembly in the 19th general election, then lost twice, and won back his seat in the 22nd general election. But after the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration, Park gave up his parliamentary seat and ran for South Chungcheong governor, rising to lead the provincial government.
Park was born in 1964 in Gongju, South Chungcheong. After graduating from the affiliated high school of the College of Education at Kongju National University, Park entered the Department of Western History at Seoul National University but dropped out. Park then majored in public administration at Korea National Open University and received a master's degree in public administration from the Graduate School of Public Administration at Yonsei University.
Park is regarded as a representative "communication-oriented politician" in the Chungcheong-region progressive camp. In the 2012 19th general election, Park entered the national political stage by winning a National Assembly seat from Gongju, South Chungcheong. As a freshman lawmaker, Park drew attention for a story of commuting daily by express bus from Gongju to the National Assembly in Yeouido, Seoul, underscoring focus on district work. Park later served as the party's floor Spokesperson, Spokesperson, and chief of staff to the party leader, handling internal communication and publicity roles across the board.
After the launch of the Moon Jae-in administration, Park was tapped as the first Blue House Spokesperson. After stepping down as Blue House Spokesperson, Park ran for South Chungcheong governor in the 2018 local elections but dropped out midrace. Park then served as chief of staff to National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang, gaining political experience shuttling between the National Assembly and the Blue House.
Park's political journey was a cycle of defeats and comebacks. In the 20th and 21st general elections, Park ran in the Gongju–Buyeo–Cheongyang district but lost consecutively to People Power Party lawmaker Chung Jin-suk. Park then served as the Democratic Party of Korea's chair of publicity and communications, focusing on enhancing the party's image and outreach to the public. Near the end of the Moon Jae-in administration, Park returned to the Blue House as senior presidential secretary for public communication, assisting the outgoing former president.
In the 2024 22nd general election, Park ran again in the Gongju–Buyeo–Cheongyang district of South Chungcheong and won a second term. After returning to the National Assembly, Park served as chair of the Special Committee on Balanced Growth under the Presidential Committee on Policy Planning during the launch of the Lee Jae-myung administration. Park is seen as having built strengths in political communication and policy publicity based on experience across the party, the National Assembly, and the Blue House.
In this South Chungcheong gubernatorial race, Park pledged as core promises to build "South Chungcheong, the AI capital" and to achieve balanced growth by zone across its 15 cities and counties. Park also said that even if it shortens the term, the South Chungcheong–Daejeon integrated special city would be completed by the 2028 general election. Attention is on how Park, who entered provincial leadership by defeating the incumbent governor, will deliver on plans for industrial transition and balanced regional development in South Chungcheong.
