Lee Sang-il, the People Power Party candidate for Yongin mayor in Gyeonggi, was elected in the June 3 local elections. With this, Lee became the first head of a basic local government in Yongin to win a second term.
President-elect Lee Sang-il said in a message released shortly after his victory was confirmed early on the 4th, "I sincerely thank the citizens who once again entrusted me with Yongin's future," adding, "This victory is not a personal victory but a great victory for all the citizens who want Yongin's development, and a victory for the campaign workers, volunteers, and party members who ran together through a difficult process."
Lee also said of the election results, "It reflects citizens' views on who knows Yongin well and can take responsibility for its future," adding, "In particular, it carries the great intent that we must protect the semiconductor industry, Korea's future growth engine, and the Yongin semiconductor cluster."
He continued, "Yongin is now leaping forward as the central city of the world's and Korea's largest semiconductor cluster," adding, "It is moving toward a 1.5 million-strong metropolitan city."
Lee said, "We will press ahead unwaveringly with the semiconductor project and continue without interruption the tasks that improve citizens' quality of life, including transportation, education, culture, and welfare."
