On the 1st, two days before the June 3 local elections' main vote, Democratic Party of Korea Seoul mayoral candidate Chong Won-o visited Jongno, Guro and Geumcheon districts to meet residents. However, during the Geumcheon stump speech, an explosion occurred at Hanwha Aerospace, and the campaign was urgently suspended.
On the morning of the 1st, Chong visited the Donui-dong jjokbang village in Jongno District, Seoul, to check preparations for the summer heat wave.
That day, pointing out the interior layout of the jjokbang village, Chong asked, "What is the reason air conditioners cannot be installed in individual jjokbang units?" and noted, "When the (Seongdong) District ran an air conditioner program, the expense did not cost much," among other points.
Chong added, "They say the stress and pain of being unable to sleep (when it's hot) are severe," and advised, "(If feasible structurally) connect with private corporations that want to engage in social contribution." Choi Seon-gwan, Deputy Minister at the Salvation Army Maintenance Foundation, answered, "We will look into it more carefully."
Chong then visited "Our Neighborhood Oral Health Center," which provides free dental treatment to jjokbang village residents on the fifth floor. There, Chong asked questions such as, "How many people have received treatment so far?" and "Is it by appointment?"
Looking down over the Donui-dong jjokbang village, Chong asked, "Who holds ownership of the jjokbang village?" and "How is it managed?" before touring the area. Looking at the emergency fire extinguishing equipment, Chong asked, "Has everyone received training so that anyone can take it out when needed?"
A resident living in the jjokbang village asked the touring candidate Chong to "become a mayor who communicates."
After making a round of the area, Chong said, "The reason extreme heat is dangerous is that it significantly weakens people's evacuation ability," and urged, "In summer, please manage air conditioner short-circuiting well."
Chong then campaigned with back-to-back visits to Hyundai Outlet in Geumcheon District, Seoul, and the front of Guro Digital Complex in Guro District. However, shortly after the stump began, an explosion occurred at Hanwha Aerospace in Daejeon, and the campaign was temporarily suspended.
At the scene, Chong said, "We are temporarily suspending the campaign today due to the fire accident." Chong added, "Many of you joined us today, and I offer my apologies. We ask for your understanding as we suspend campaigning related to the fire in the hope there will be no damage," and said, "We earnestly pray there will be no damage," before leaving.
Later, Chong's campaign office said it would "temporarily suspend concentrated campaign schedules, choreography and campaign songs," and canceled the concentrated campaign event scheduled for the afternoon at Namseong Sagae Market in Dongjak District.
The "Hi Seoul corporations roundtable" in Gangnam District, Seoul, and the "Gangnam redevelopment and reconstruction roundtable" at the Eunma Apartments shopping area in Gangnam District will proceed without disruption.
