Regarding the Hanwha Aerospace explosion in Daejeon on the 1st, ruling and opposition candidates for Daejeon mayor urgently suspended their campaign events and wished for a swift response to the accident.
Heo Tae-jung of the Democratic Party of Korea said on social media after the accident, "My campaign and I will suspend our scheduled campaigning, judging that handling the accident and citizen safety must come first," and added, "Please do your utmost for a swift and safe response to prevent any additional harm."
Lee Jang-woo of the People Power Party, the incumbent Daejeon mayor (suspended from duty), also halted his campaign activities, including a truck rally scheduled for the day. Lee said, "I express my deepest condolences to those who lost their precious lives in today's accident," and added, "We will suspend all campaign activities and do everything we can for recovery efforts and a thorough investigation."
A blast occurred in the morning at Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant in Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, leaving seven people dead or injured. According to fire authorities, five people died and two were injured in the accident. Police and fire authorities plan to investigate the exact cause once firefighting operations are completed.
