At the Seoul mayoral TV debate held on the 28th, Democratic Party of Korea candidate Chong Won-o and People Power Party candidate Oh Se-hoon clashed over the supply of dwellings and delays in the Haengdang District 7 redevelopment project.
Chong said, "Oh Se-hoon says the current housing shortage is the fault of his predecessor and the government, but in fact, if Oh had simply kept his promises, there would have been no housing problem," adding, "When he ran in the 2021 local elections, Oh promised to supply 360,000 units within five years, but Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) statistics show only 39,000 units broke ground from 2022 to 2024."
Chong said, "Oh cannot keep what he promised and yet blames the government," adding, "Many people think the housing shortage happened because of Oh Se-hoon."
Oh responded, "They say I blame my predecessor, but it is true that (the predecessor) lifted designations in 389 places," adding, "Isn't that why we are trying to scrap everything and restore it to the original state?"
Chong said he had "actively pursued apartment supply projects," adding, "Of the 21 apartment supply areas at the time I took office as district chief, more than half—12 districts—have completed move-ins." In response, Oh also pointed out, "I wish you would clearly say that all 21 of those areas were designated during my term as (Seoul) mayor."
Chong also criticized Oh for being passive on purchase-based public rental dwellings. Chong said, "Oh left 4 trillion won unspent for purchase-based public rental dwellings, officetels, and urban-style studio dwellings," adding, "I will supply 50,000 units for young people and college students and 10,000 units for seniors to solve the housing problem."
Oh replied, "I figured you would say that, so I prepared a chart. During my term, the supply performance of purchase-based public rental dwellings is higher than under Park Won-soon."
Chong and Oh also sparred over the Haengdang District 7 Agissidang issue. Oh said, "There may be collusive ties," and pressed, "Did you discipline the responsible public official?"
Chong answered, "It was decided in 2008 by a district chief from the Hannara Party," adding, "After I came in, I fully explained to the association that contributed acceptance was not possible." On the possibility of collusive ties, he said, "It is clearly false information."
In response to Chong's rebuttal, Oh said, "It will be revealed as the investigation proceeds," and Chong criticized Oh by bringing up the failure to obtain government approval for the Banpo Jugong Complex 1 redevelopment project. The two candidates also raised their voices at each other over the Haengdang District 7 Agissidang issue.
