A poll found that Lee Kwang-jae of the Democratic Party of Korea, running in the by-election for lawmaker in Hanam Gap, Gyeonggi, is leading Lee Yong of the People Power Party beyond the margin of error.
On the 24th, a Korea Society Opinion Institute (KSOI) poll commissioned by CBS of 500 eligible voters in Hanam Gap, Gyeonggi, on the 22nd–23rd showed Lee Kwang-jae at 48.8% and Lee Yong at 39.1%. The gap between the two was 9.7 percentage points (p), outside the margin of error. In addition, Kim Seong-yeol of the Reform Party had 4.3%, "no preferred candidate" 3.4%, and "don't know" 4.4%.
Among voters who identified their political orientation as "centrist," Lee Kwang-jae led with 56.2%, 22.5 percentage points ahead of Lee Yong (33.7%). By age group, Lee Kwang-jae led among those in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, while Lee Yong led among those in their teens, 20s, 30s, and 70s and older. Kim Seong-yeol recorded 16.5% among those in their 30s, showing higher support than in other age groups.
As for criteria for choosing a candidate, "potential contribution to regional development" was highest at 30.1%. That was followed by "party affiliation" at 28.5%, "character and competence" at 26.8%, "policies and pledges" at 4.6%, and "morality and integrity" at 4.5%.
In Hanam Gap, approval of the president's job performance was 60.4% positive, 33.4% negative, and 6.2% "don't know." Party approval stood at Democratic Party of Korea 41.0%, People Power Party 27.4%, Reform Party 6.6%, Rebuilding Korea Party 3.2%, The Progressive Party 1.8%. "Other parties" were 2.3%, "none" 15.7%, and "don't know" 1.9%.
The survey was conducted via a wireless interactive voice response (ARS) poll using mobile virtual numbers provided by telecom carriers. The response rate was 6.6%.
