Chong Won-o of the Democratic Party of Korea and Oh Se-hoon of the People Power Party, who are running for Seoul mayor in the June 3 local elections, headed west in Seoul in tandem to court voters on the first weekend after the official campaign kicked off.
On the morning of the 23rd, candidate Chong visited Yeonsinnae Station in Eunpyeong District to campaign. Taking the podium, Chong said, "If elected, I will issue 100 billion won worth of Eunpyeong Love vouchers in Eunpyeong District and sell them at a 10% discount to revive local shopping streets and ease household expenses."
Chong also unveiled local development pledges. Chong said, "We will develop Eunpyeong Station into a triple-transfer hub to increase proximity between home and work, cut commute times, and ease the burden on office workers." Chong added, "We will draw corporations concentrated in Gangnam to Eunpyeong by leveraging the Susaek station area and the transfer of the rail yard, and, together with Sangam, make it a core business district."
Chong went on to say, "We will ensure the Seobu Line and the Gangbuk Transversal Line, which have stalled during Oh Se-hoon's term, and the Goyang and Sinsa lines being pushed by city and district council members, break ground and are completed on schedule."
After the rally in Eunpyeong District, Chong will stop by Hongje Station and then visit the Moa Town initiative site in Hyeonjeo-dong to identify improvements to the Moa Town initiative through conversations with residents. In the evening, Chong plans a street rally in Hongdae to win over young voters.
Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party's Seoul mayoral candidate, visited the Han River Running Station at Yeouinaru Station in Yeongdeungpo District on the morning of the 23rd, then continued campaigning around Sinjeongnegeori in Yangcheon District and Balsan Station in Gangseo District.
Visiting Sinjeongnegeori, Oh said of the Mok-dong reconstruction, "It is rare to see a large complex rebuilt at such a rapid pace," adding, "We must maintain the current momentum." Oh also said, "We are pursuing a plan to develop the Mokdong Stadium detention basin like COEX."
Oh said, "A scenic café will open next month along Anyangcheon near Sinmokdong Station on the Sinmokdong Line, and a cultural center is expected to be created in the West Seoul Lake Park," adding, "Taking the groundbreaking of the Daejang–Hongdae Line as a starting point, we will push ahead with the Gangbuk Transversal Line and the Mok-dong Line without a hitch."
Oh also addressed real estate issues. Oh said, "Housing costs have risen sharply, increasing the burden on residents," diagnosing that "a shortage of jeonse supply is driving up prices, and more units are switching to monthly rent, adding to the burden." Oh added, "With higher taxes and lending regulations, it is difficult to purchase dwellings without cash," saying, "There is a problem with the government's policy direction."
After finishing rallies in the western districts, Oh moved to the International Garden Expo site in Seoul Forest in Seongdong District to continue his walkabouts, and in the evening will conclude by greeting residents at Seokchon Lake in Songpa District.
