Chong Won-o, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Seoul mayor, embarked on a second straight day of emphasizing "safety."
On the 22nd in the morning, the candidate attended a memorial cultural event marking the 10th anniversary of the Guui Station disaster. Wearing a black suit, the candidate first affixed a yellow Post-it note to the Guui Station screen door that read, "We will make Seoul a city where you have the right to work safely."
The candidate said, "The two-person team system has been corrected in many cases, but accidents still happen and corrections are not being made," adding, "With the passage of the Basic Law on Life and Safety, we will form a Life and Safety Committee in the Seoul city government to address matters comprehensively."
Regarding the GTX debate proposed by candidate Oh Se-hoon, the candidate said, "Safety is about paying attention, responding, and acting—can that be a debate?" adding, "What candidate Oh should do is go to Samseong Station himself, examine the site, and work out countermeasures."
At the memorial cultural event marking the 10th anniversary of the Guui Station disaster that day, among the Seoul mayoral candidates, the candidate and Kwon Young-guk of the Justice Party attended. In response to criticism that Oh Se-hoon was campaigning nearby, the candidate said, "I'm also curious why he didn't come to an important agreement," adding, "I believe protecting citizens' safety is the first duty of the mayor, which is why I attended this event."
Candidate Oh announced plans to visit the site on the 28th, the 10th anniversary of the accident.
On the 21st, the candidate also visited the GTX-A Samseong Station site where rebar was omitted to stress "safety." The candidate said, "It was clearly deemed poor construction, and even though a report was made, it is questionable that space was created to reinforce the rebar and the rest of the work proceeded."
