Samsung Electronics labor and management on the 19th in the morning entered the second day of post-mediation led by the Central Labor Relations Commission under the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL). The two sides said in post-mediation the previous day that they would continue talks until 7 p.m. Park Su-keun, chairperson of the Central Labor Relations Commission, said to reporters as he went into the post-mediation meeting that "some (differences between labor and management) are narrowing."
Chairperson Park entered the Central Labor Relations Commission conference room at the Government Complex Sejong at 9:55 a.m. When reporters asked, "When do you plan to present a mediation proposal?" Park said, "I will see whether the two parties can ultimately reach a settlement, and if they cannot, I will present it." He added, "For now, both parties still have the possibility of reaching a settlement," and "I will proceed based on that possibility."
A mediation proposal is a final plan drawn up by a mediator of the Central Labor Relations Commission after compiling the positions of labor and management and reconciling the two sides' views. If labor and management accept and sign the mediation proposal presented by the commission, it carries the same legal effect as a collective agreement.
Earlier, Samsung Electronics labor and management conducted post-mediation from 10 a.m. to 6:20 p.m. the previous day. The two sides did not draw up a negotiation plan that day and decided to continue post-mediation through today. Today's meeting will run from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. However, the meeting could go longer and may be extended through the 20th.
