The National Election Commission said on the 16th that, as a result of candidate registrations for the local elections on June 3, 513 candidates nationwide were elected without a vote. Three are heads of basic local governments, and 510 are local council members.
According to the commission, as of the 15th, after two days of candidate registration, there are 307 constituencies with uncontested elections due to single-candidate races or fewer candidates than seats.
By race, three candidates for heads of basic local governments were confirmed elected without a vote: Gwangju Seo District Chief Kim Yi-kang, Gwangju Nam District Chief Kim Byeong-nae, and Siheung Mayor candidate Im Byeong-taek in Gyeonggi. All are members of the Democratic Party of Korea.
A total of 510 local council members were also confirmed elected without voting. Metropolitan council members number 108 in districts including Seoul Eunpyeong District 2 and Gwanak District 1; basic council members number 305 in districts including Seoul Jongno District Na and Ra; and proportional basic council members number 97, including in Seoul Seongbuk and Dobong.
By party, metropolitan council members are 83 for the Democratic Party of Korea and 25 for the People Power Party; basic council members are 172 for the Democratic Party of Korea, 132 for the People Power Party, and 1 for The Progressive Party; and proportional basic council members are 56 for the Democratic Party of Korea and 41 for the People Power Party.
