As of 9 p.m. on the 14th, the first day of registration for candidates in the June 3 local elections, a total of 49 candidates for metropolitan mayors and governors had completed registration. The average assets per person came to 1.84149 billion won.
The wealthiest candidate is Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party's Seoul mayoral candidate, who reported 7.289609 billion won. Moon Sung-yu, the People Power Party's Jeju governor candidate, ranked second with 5.994742 billion won, and Park Heong-joon, the People Power Party's Busan mayoral candidate, was third with 5.529921 billion won.
Jeong I-han, the Reform Party's Busan mayoral candidate, followed with 4.971516 billion won, and Choo Kyung-ho, the People Power Party's Daegu mayoral candidate, with 4.710692 billion won.
By contrast, Kim Young-hwan, the People Power Party's North Chungcheong governor candidate, reported "minus assets" of -552.974 million won. Oh Jung-gi, the Democratic Party candidate for North Gyeongsang governor, had only 22.02 million won, and Kang Hee-rin, the Reform Party's Daejeon mayoral candidate, reported 43.273 million won.
By party, the Democratic Party stood at 1.562622 billion won, the People Power Party at 3.128521 billion won, The Progressive Party at 343.586 million won, and the Reform Party at 1.489946 billion won.
Of the 49 candidates for metropolitan mayors and governors, 44 were men. Of these, 12 did not complete military service. By party, the Democratic Party had six, the People Power Party four, and the Justice Party and The Progressive Party one each. All Reform Party candidates subject to conscription had completed their service.
Democratic Party candidates Kim Boo-kyum for Daegu mayor and Lee Won-taek for North Jeolla governor were removed from the military register due to convictions. Kim Kyeong-soo, the South Gyeongsang governor candidate, was assigned to wartime labor service for ankylosis of the ankle joint, Wi Seong-gon, the Jeju governor candidate, for meniscus surgery of the knee, and Heo Tae-jung, the Daejeon mayoral candidate, was exempted due to an accident that amputated his right big toe.
Park Heong-joon, the People Power Party's Busan mayoral candidate, was exempted due to myopia and anisometropia, and Kim Young-hwan, the North Chungcheong governor candidate, due to a conviction. Choo Kyung-ho, the Daegu mayoral candidate, was first classified for supplementary service because of pulmonary tuberculosis and was later exempted from call-up.
Criminal records were also not uncommon. Of the 49 candidates, 18 had prior convictions. Kim Hyun-wook, the National Union's Gyeonggi governor candidate, had the most with nine, Hong Seong-gyu, The Progressive Party's Gyeonggi governor candidate, had six, and Kim Kyeong-soo, the Democratic Party's South Gyeongsang governor candidate, and Kwon Young-guk, the Justice Party's Seoul mayoral candidate, had four each. Democratic Party candidates Chong Won-o for Seoul mayor, Woo Sang-ho for Gangwon governor, Lee Won-taek for North Jeolla governor, Oh Jung-gi for North Gyeongsang governor, and Lee Jang-woo, the People Power Party's Daejeon mayoral candidate, each reported two prior convictions.
