Ahead of the June 3 local elections, the People Power Party is moving to launch a central election countermeasures committee led by Chair Jang Dong-hyeok. The strategy is to put the issue of the special counsel bill to cancel President Lee Jae-myung's indictment front and center.
Chief spokesperson Park Sung-hoon met with reporters on the 11th and said, "We will announce the central election committee before candidate registration on Thursday and Friday," adding, "We are working to bring on board figures with broad appeal who can rally conservative supporters and resonate with moderates and the unaffiliated."
Chair Jang is expected to serve as a standing election committee co-chair. Chief spokesperson Park said, "In the past, party chairs have served as co-chairs or standing co-chairs, so I don't think we will deviate from that scope this time," adding, "It is important for the central committee to deliver a consistent, nationwide offensive message against the administration, and the party chair's role is indispensable."
The central committee is expected to put veteran lawmakers and youth at the forefront. Lawmakers Na Kyung-won and Ahn Cheol-soo are likely to join as committee co-chairs. Appointments are expected to be finalized and announced around Wednesday, before Thursday.
The People Power Party plans to make the special counsel bill to cancel the indictment a centerpiece issue in these local elections. It will form a "TF to respond to indictment cancellation" within the central committee and plans to publicize the unfairness of the special counsel bill on indictment cancellation being pushed by the ruling party. In addition to party-affiliated lawmakers, legal experts and others also plan to take part in the task force.
