The Democratic Party of Korea on the 10th held an inauguration ceremony for the "Korea national normalization election countermeasures committee" at the National Assembly and formalized its transition to the central election committee. With the June 3 local elections ahead, it shifted into full election mode.
Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae said that day, "This election countermeasures committee is a grand-unity, grand-tolerance, integrative campaign committee that brings in new figures reflecting the people's aspirations," and announced four standing co-chairs recruited from outside the party.
They are former North Chungcheong Governor Lee Si-jong; Geum Hee-jung, a surgeon from Daegu; Lee Bon-ah, a naturalized Korean from Myanmar; and An Sun-ha, an adviser to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Jung described former Governor Lee Si-jong as "someone with an undefeated 8-for-8 election record, having served as Yeongwol county chief, three-term Chungju mayor, two-term National Assembly member from Chungju, and three-term North Chungcheong governor," adding, "We expect him to take charge of a winning campaign strategy."
About adviser An Sun-ha, Jung introduced the person as "a current adviser to the World Health Organization in the fields of climate, artificial intelligence, and health," and about Geum Hee-jung, said, "As a daughter of TK, a Daegu citizen and a surgeon, this person became widely known for a supporting speech in May when Lee Jae-myung was then a presidential candidate." As for Lee Bon-ha, Jung said, "A naturalized Korean from Myanmar, this person is active in various fields," adding, "As multicultural families are steadily increasing, we expect this person to take on many policies to improve the quality of life for multicultural families and speak up."
In addition, seven Democratic Party supreme council members—Lee Un-ju, Hwang Myung-seon, Kang Deuk-gu, Lee Sung-yoon, Moon Jeong-bok, Park Gee-won, and Park Gyu-hwan—were named joint campaign co-chairs. The party also announced personnel including Lee Won-jong and Jeon Hyun-hee as "every alley" joint campaign co-chairs, Cho Seung-rae as chief campaign director, Han Jeong-ae as head of the Korea national normalization headquarters, and Park Ju-min as head of the "Otteok" stump team.
Jung emphasized, "In this election, we must punish those arrogant forces that, with 'Yoon again' nominations, once more dream of insurrection. We must win this election, cut off the sprouts of insurrection, and set right the democracy that has collapsed."
