Jung Chung-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea and Jang Dong-hyeok of the People Power Party kicked off their weekend local election campaigning on the 9th. They attended opening ceremonies for their parties' candidates' campaign offices to lend support. In particular, Jang continued his offensive against the government and the ruling party by posting a series of messages on social networking services (SNS).
Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae attended the opening of Sejong mayoral candidate Jo Sang-ho's campaign office in the morning on the 9th, and the openings for Busan mayoral candidate Chun Jae-soo and Ulsan Nam-gap National Assembly by-election candidate Jeon Tae-jin's campaign offices in the afternoon. He completed a schedule in a single day that took him from the Chungcheong region to the Yeongnam region.
In Sejong, Jung pledged to "complete the administrative capital," and in Busan, to "complete the maritime capital." At Chun Jae-soo's opening ceremony that day, Jung said, "As I travel, I say the party will spare nothing and provide all possible support," adding, "Behind Busan stand the Democratic Party, the ruling party, and the Lee Jae-myung administration, so you are not alone."
At Jo Sang-ho's opening ceremony that morning, he said, "Candidate Jo is the person who has embodied, more than anyone, what Lee Hae-chan sought to do and the spirit Lee Hae-chan held," adding, "When the June 3 local elections end, we will move in earnest to pass the Special Act on the Administrative Capital so that Sejong can function as the administrative capital, and we will do our best so that various preferential measures can be realized here."
People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok focused on the Chungcheong region, attending the opening ceremonies for Okcheon County chief candidate Jeon Sang-in and South Chungcheong Governor candidate Kim Tae-heum in the afternoon. Before the ceremonies, he visited the birthplace of Yuk Young-soo, spouse of former President Park Chung-hee, in Okcheon County, North Chungcheong Province.
At Kim Tae-heum's opening ceremony, Jang said, "The development of South Chungcheong must continue without interruption. Strong South Chungcheong still needs strong Kim Tae-heum," adding, "This election is about protecting the future of the Republic of Korea and setting the rule of law in the Republic of Korea straight."
From the morning until 4:30 p.m. that day, Jang also mounted an "online offensive," posting five messages on SNS. The main topics were the controversy over dropping the prosecution in the president Lee's case and issues in diplomacy and national security.
In particular, on Facebook Jang wrote, "I visited my 95-year-old mother for the first time in a while. When she grumbled that Lee Jae-myung is dropping the prosecution, I asked if she knew what dropping the prosecution means," adding, "She snapped, 'Are you looking down on me?' I only asked because Democratic Party lawmaker Park Sung-joon said nine out of ten people don't know what dropping the prosecution means."
