Chong Won-o, the Democratic Party of Korea candidate for Seoul mayor, moved to win over Gangnam voters.
In the on-site supreme council meeting of the Democratic Party held in Songpa, Seoul, on the morning of the 8th, candidate Chong proposed to leader Jung Chung-rae the creation of a "Special Committee on the Four Gangnam Districts (Gangnam Special Committee)." In the afternoon, he visited a redevelopment site in Gangnam District, Seoul, and promised residents a swift push for reconstruction.
That afternoon, Chong visited Gaepo Woosung 7th Apartments in Gangnam District, Seoul, where a reconstruction project is underway. Walking between the buildings of the Gaepo Woosung apartment complex, Chong spoke with stakeholders including the head of the reconstruction maintenance association. He then held a roundtable with association members at an office nearby.
Reconstruction association officials aired multiple complaints, saying, "The reconstruction review period is long," "For small complexes with 500 households or fewer, hand over decision-making authority to the district office," and "Across the street are high-rise apartments, but here it's a slum."
Chong told association members, "The 'Steady Development' pledge includes measures such as increasing the number of review committee meetings," adding, "The core of 'Steady Development' is to move up these timelines to clear bottlenecks."
He continued, "To speed up reconstruction, hold review stages more frequently, and if we transfer project authority for fewer than 500 households to the district office, the (reconstruction) pace can really pick up," adding, "This is included in the Steady Development pledge, and if I become mayor, I will move even faster."
A person surnamed Lee (77), head of the Gaepo Woosung 6th Apartments association who attended the roundtable, said, "Chong said that if he becomes mayor, he will 'create a Gangnam Special Committee to provide special support for reconstruction and redevelopment in the Gangnam area.'"
Earlier that morning, at the supreme council meeting held in Seokchon-dong, Songpa District, Seoul, Chong asked leader Jung Chung-rae to form the "Gangnam Special Committee."
Chong said, "Oh Se-hoon, the People Power Party candidate, is blaming the government alone for real estate issues," adding, "As the real estate market becomes unstable, citizens know well whether he is trying to shift responsibility onto the hardworking Lee Jae-myung administration."
He added, "In various places I visited across the four Gangnam districts, citizens' inconveniences that had long been ignored were significant," and said, "I propose that the party set up a Gangnam Special Committee."
