The People Power Party on the 6th criticized the Democratic Party of Korea's push for a "prosecution cancellation special counsel bill," saying, "Beyond investigations and beyond trials, an unprecedented judicial laundering project to wash the judiciary's decisions through legislation has now begun in earnest."
Floor leader Song Eon-seog of the People Power Party raised his voice at the "rally condemning the special counsel to erase President Lee Jae-myung's crimes," held before the party caucus at the National Assembly that day, saying, "Police should catch thieves; how can thieves be the ones appointing police? Judges should try thieves' crimes, but can thieves overturn judges' rulings?" and "Is this a country? The country is running in a bizarre way."
Song said, "What we learned in school—fairness and common sense, morals and ethics, rules and proper conduct—is being flipped 180 degrees. The public is seeing the bare face of criminal sovereignty," adding, "A power holder called the president is mobilizing all authority to wipe out criminal records completely. It is a thoroughly dictatorial mindset and tyranny."
He went on, "Worried about a backlash in public opinion before the election, they say, 'Please judge the timing and procedure well,' but that is a remark that utterly disrespects the people of Korea," adding, "They should make an upfront campaign pledge in the local elections to cancel prosecutions and face the judgment of the people. It is telling voters to their faces that they will lie and openly commit fraud."
Next, lawmaker Yoon Sang-hyun, delivering a condemnation speech, said, "There are two principles that support Korea," adding, "One is that all people are equal before the law, and the second is that no one can be a judge in their own case. But the government and the ruling party have broken both principles."
Yoon said, "To serve Lee Jae-myung alone, they are creating a prosecution cancellation special counsel to shake investigative agencies and intimidate the bench, seeking to launder 12 criminal charges into complete acquittals," adding, "It is a self-amnesty legislative coup in which politics wrecks the rule of law."
He continued, "On Mar. 10, 2017, the day former President Park Geun-hye was facing the impeachment ruling, then-Seongnam Mayor Lee shouted, 'A president who commits a crime must go to prison,'" adding, "So why is President Lee now creating an era of sanctuaries that completely launders his own alleged crimes?"
Yoon said, "In 21st-century Korea, a Führer era rivaling that of Führer Hitler, who claimed supremacy over all, has arrived," adding, "Parties, civic groups, and the legal community that oppose the prosecution cancellation special counsel must unite to form a pan-opposition, pan-civic emergency action body and launch a nationwide struggle."
