The Democratic Party of Korea has re-elected Rep. Han Byung-do as its new floor leader.
The Democratic Party held a floor leader election at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 6th. In this floor leader election, Rep. Han ran unopposed. Han was elected in a by-election for floor leader in January, held after former floor leader Kim Byung-kee resigned over a nomination donation issue, and has since led the floor.
In his policy address, Floor Leader Han said, "The party must act in perfect unity to achieve a landslide victory in the local elections. With lightning-fast legislation, we must firmly support state affairs," adding, "After the local elections, we will again activate an emergency legislative regime." Since becoming floor leader in January, Han has led the passage of a total of 396 bills.
Han said, "For the stable governance of the Lee Jae-myung administration, over the next year—and especially by December this year—we must complete legislation on all key policy tasks," adding, "With bold breakthrough power that wavers neither left nor right, we will maximize the governing momentum of the Lee Jae-myung administration."
In particular, he said, "Through amendment of the Criminal Procedure Act, we will put in place the final piece of the puzzle for prosecutorial reform," adding, "The floor leader will personally work alongside lawmakers to manage their priority legislation and budgets. I want to be a floor leader who can share not only pending issues but also lawmakers' concerns."
Jung Chung-rae, the Democratic Party leader, said, "Candidate Han Byung-do is a leader with a gentle disposition and flexible leadership, and a strong eye for detail who meticulously manages every task," adding, "With less than a month left before the local elections, I have come to believe the stability and continuity of the floor leadership are very important."
