The Democratic Party of Korea is bringing in Supreme Council member Park Gee-won and National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy Committee Standing Vice Chair Im Moon-young to field them in by-elections. Park will be strategically nominated for Gunsan·Gimje·Buan in North Jeolla, and Im will be strategically nominated for Gwangsan B in Gwangju in the by-election.
The Democratic Party held its third talent recruitment ceremony at the National Assembly on the 6th and brought in Park and Im. Park is the first rank-and-file party member to be elected to the Supreme Council of the Democratic Party, and Im is a former vice chair of the presidential National AI Strategy Committee who served as a policy aide and as Gyeonggi Province future growth policy director when President Lee Jae-myung was serving as Gyeonggi governor.
Democratic Party leader Jung Chung-rae said of Park, "More than anyone, a problem-solver who knows the region well and can most clearly resolve the pending issues facing North Jeolla." Of Im, Jung said, "The top AI expert who laid the groundwork for making Korea one of the world's top three AI powers, which the Lee Jae-myung administration is actively pursuing," adding, "To actively support the Lee Jae-myung administration's AI policy at the National Assembly and party levels, talent like Vice Chair Im Moon-young is essential."
Park said, "We will join hands with our party's candidates in the region, unite as one team, scour the ground, lay the foundation, and run to spark the momentum for election victory starting from North Jeolla," vowing, "I will serve as a strong backbone that links the center and the region, and the experience of the senior generation with the future of the following generation."
Im said, "This is not a run simply for a National Assembly seat, but a special mission to change politics into forward-looking, productive politics based on science and technology," adding, "I will rebuild South Korea's aging and withering growth engines." Im continued, "I will return to Gwangju at Mudeungsan, which raised me, and transform it into the most advanced city in the AI era and the most advanced region through energy transition."
The Democratic Party plans to convene the Strategic Nomination Committee on the afternoon of the 6th and strategically nominate Park for Gunsan·Gimje·Buan in North Jeolla and Im for the Gwangsan B re-election in Gwangju.
