Song Eon-seog, the People Power Party floor leader, on the 3rd criticized the Democratic Party of Korea's push for a "special counsel bill to cancel the indictment," saying it was "like a thief appointing the police," and "the police appointed by the thief are trying to erase the thief's crimes."
Song held a press briefing at the National Assembly that day and said, "In the parliamentary inquiry, far from grounds for a fabricated indictment, testimony poured out that proves President Lee Jae-myung's guilt," and stated accordingly.
He said, "Bang Yong-cheol, SSANGBANGWOOL vice chairman, testified that in July 2019 in the Philippines he met Ri Ho-nam and remitted $700,000 in return for then Gyeonggi Gov. Lee Jae-myung's visit to North Korea, and former SSANGBANGWOOL Chairman Kim Sung-tae clearly testified that there was no 'salmon sashimi drinking party.'"
He went on, "In the end, this parliamentary inquiry moved one step closer to the truth by proving President Lee's guilt, and it laid bare the Democratic Party's fabricated-indictment, false-agitation face," and asked back, "On what grounds are they jumping from a parliamentary inquiry to yet another special counsel? Are they not trying to force the special counsel into a bogus investigation and a contrived cancellation of the indictment?"
Song said, "There is an old legal maxim that no one can be the judge in one's own case," adding, "The president appointing a special counsel and that special counsel trying to erase the appointing authority's trial runs directly counter to the principles of modern rule of law."
He added, "The June 3 local elections are expected to become a vote on the legitimacy of canceling the indictment," stressing, "It will be an election that asks whether it is acceptable to wipe out the president's trial entirely, whether such privilege is permissible just because of the presidency, and whether this is a country of privilege and unfairness or a country of rule of law and justice."
Asked whether there were responses other than a filibuster (unlimited debate) if the Democratic Party pushes the special counsel bill, he said, "We acknowledge that as a minority opposition party, the legal means available to us are very limited," but added, "The arrogance of thinking a majority lets you do whatever you want will not be tolerated by the public, regardless of the number of seats in the National Assembly."
He also said, "On what can be done within the National Assembly, we will use any and all means and methods, bring the public's warning gaze directly onto the Assembly floor, and fight to the end."
Regarding Reform Party Gyeonggi governor candidate Cho Eung-cheon proposing a joint meeting that day to candidates for metropolitan mayors and governors in the greater Seoul area, he said, "It is a very timely and important proposal for all related parties that share the same view to gather in one place and speak with one voice."
He continued, "I understand the Justice Party has already presented an opposing view on the special counsel for canceling the indictment," and suggested, "Wouldn't it be appropriate to separately push for a meeting among party leaders who share that view?"
