The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Public Transport Workers' Union Cargo Solidarity Headquarters (Cargo Solidarity) and BGF Logistics, the logistics subsidiary of convenience store CU, said on the 30th that they reached an agreement to improve delivery drivers' working conditions.
On the day, Cargo Solidarity and BGF Logistics signed a collective agreement at the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) Jinju Branch in South Gyeongsang that included measures to improve transport conditions and restore the honor of a union member who died amid bargaining demands. The signing ceremony was originally set for the previous day, but it was postponed by one day as the two sides failed to narrow differences over how to restore the deceased member's honor.
Attending the signing ceremony were Kim Jong-in, Cargo Solidarity's chief negotiator, and Lee Min-jae, BGF Logistics' CEO, among others. The two sides agreed to raise freight rates by 7% from current levels. BGF Logistics agreed to guarantee one day of paid leave per quarter for truck owners. It also agreed to withdraw its damages claim filed over logistics disruptions it said were caused by Cargo Solidarity's rallies. In addition, it agreed to offer an apology to the bereaved family of the deceased union member. Cargo Solidarity agreed to lift the blockade of the Jinju logistics center that began on the 20th.
Cargo Solidarity Chairperson Kim Dong-guk said, "The tragic death of our member occurred during the excessive deployment of state power," adding, "We will continue to pursue the truth and hold those responsible to account to the end." BGF Logistics CEO Lee Min-jae said, "I hope this serves as a valuable priming water to build a healthy union ecosystem in which labor and management trust each other."
