The Democratic Party of Korea nullified its recommendation for the candidate for Yanggu County head in Gangwon. It also decided to announce results related to nullification for the Suncheon mayor and the Jongno District and Gangbuk District chiefs in Seoul after the Ethics Inspection Corps' reexamination committee completes its probe.
Kang Jun-hyeon, senior spokesperson of the Democratic Party, met with reporters after the supreme council meeting held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 29th and said, "For candidate Kim Cheol in the Yanggu County head constituency in Gangwon, the supreme council resolved to nullify the candidate recommendation and designate the area as a strategic constituency for re-recommendation."
He added, "The Suncheon mayor, the Jongno District chief, and the Gangbuk District chief, which have been widely discussed in the media, will undergo about a day of investigation today (the 29th), and the supreme council is likely to resolve it by tomorrow," and said, "We will focus on winning under the name of the Democratic Party."
Regarding the Democratic Party's Jongno District chief candidate, there are allegations of cash being given to local residents, and for the Gangbuk District chief candidate, allegations of covering meal expenses have been raised. The Suncheon mayoral candidate is under inspection over alleged illegal political funds.
Kang, the senior spokesperson, also said, "It seems that a single-candidate merger in Pyeongtaek-eul, Gyeonggi, is being talked about a lot. It is not the time to talk about a merger now," adding, "The party's stance is clear: to do our best to ensure the Democratic Party candidate's victory."
Regarding strategic nominations for the National Assembly by-elections, he said, "We plan to conclude strategic nominations by early next month," adding, "Announcements of candidates for the National Assembly by-elections could continue through this weekend."
