The government will create 23,000 short-term youth jobs at public institutions and corporations. For young people with no work experience, it plans to provide a job-seeking promotion allowance of 600,000 won per month for up to six months.
On the 29th, the government announced the "Youth New Deal promotion plan." In the first quarter, the unemployment rate for ages 15 to 29 was 7.4%, the highest in five years since 2021 (9.9%). In response, the government rolled out measures to offer short-term jobs to young people and expand support for education.
The government said it will create 20,000 jobs in the public institutional sector. These jobs include 9,500 field verifiers who check the living conditions of delinquent taxpayers and 4,000 personnel for a nationwide farmland survey to build databases and curb farmland speculation. The public institutions' youth intern program will also expand by 3,000 compared with the previous year. Private corporations will add 3,000 positions, including hiring-linked internships in tourism, content, culture and arts, and digital fields.
The government also decided to strengthen support for job-seeking activities. Young people with no work experience who are at or below 120% of the median income standard and have assets of 500 million won or less will receive a job-seeking promotion allowance of 600,000 won per month. The allowance had previously been paid only to those with work experience within the past two years, but the eligibility has been eased. The total number of recipients is 30,000.
The government will also increase the number of beneficiaries of vocational training programs. It will newly launch the K-New Deal Academy, a vocational training program directly designed and operated by private corporations, with a capacity of 10,000. Short-term intensive university courses, previously offered only to enrolled students, will be offered to non-students as well. As a result, the number of beneficiaries will increase by 4,000. In addition, the number of beneficiaries of the advanced industry and digital core practical talent training project will grow by 5,000.
