Busan mayoral candidate Jeong I-han of the Reform Party was injured in the head by a drink that flew from a moving vehicle during a campaign rally. The Reform Party criticized it as "a terror attack that threatens democracy."
According to the Reform Party and others on the 27th, at about 8:07 a.m. that day, while candidate Jeong was campaigning near the Guseo Interchange in Geumjeong District, Busan, a passing car driver splashed a drink. Jeong briefly lost balance and hit the back of the head on the ground. Jeong lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital.
Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident, including by analyzing footage from witnesses and closed-circuit (CC)TV near the scene.
The Reform Party defined it as a physical attack against an election candidate. The Reform Party said it was "by no means a matter that can be taken lightly," adding it was "not a simple accident, but a clear act of violence that threatens the basic order of democracy and, in effect, terror."
It added, "We strongly condemn this incident," and said, "Police must investigate the circumstances swiftly and thoroughly, without a shred of doubt, identify the assailant without fail, and hold them strictly accountable."
