Lee Jae-myung, the president, on the 26th addressed the shooting incident that occurred at an event for U.S. President Donald Trump, saying, "Political violence is a grave threat that undermines the foundations of democracy," and "It can never be justified for any reason."
In a message posted to social media that day, the president said, "I am relieved by the news that everyone at the scene, including President Trump and his spouse, is safe, and I extend my deepest condolences to the people of the United States."
He added, "I am shocked by the outbreak of violence at today's White House Correspondents' Dinner," and said, "It is all the more regrettable that such an incident occurred at a venue meant to affirm communication with the press and freedom of expression."
The president added, "The government of the Republic of Korea firmly opposes all forms of violence and extremism that undermine the values of democracy and the rule of law."
