The People Power Party elected lawmaker Choo Kyung-ho as its candidate for Daegu mayor.
The People Power Party's central nomination management committee on the morning of the 26th at the central party headquarters in Yeouido announced the results of the main primary for Daegu mayor, combining the outcomes of a public opinion poll and party member vote conducted over two days on the 24th and 25th. In the main primary, lawmaker Choo Kyung-ho defeated lawmaker Yoo Young-ha and was confirmed as the People Power Party's candidate for Daegu mayor.
Choo will face Democratic Party of Korea candidate Kim Boo-kyum in a one-on-one race for Daegu mayor.
Initially, the Daegu mayoral election was expected to feature multiple conservative candidates due to the potential independent bids by lawmaker Joo Ho-young, who was cut off in the party primary, and former Korea Communications Commission member Lee Jin-sook. However, as both announced they would not run, the race will be held as a one-on-one contest between the People Power Party and the Democratic Party.
Choo Kyung-ho, a native of Daegu, served as the first deputy prime minister for the economy and Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance in the Yoon Suk-yeol administration. He served three terms as a National Assembly member from Dalseong, Daegu, and also served as the People Power Party floor leader.
Meanwhile, the People Power Party made a sole recommendation of former lawmaker Yoo Ui-dong for the Pyeongtaek National Assembly by-election. In Incheon Gyeyang B, which was the constituency of President Lee Jae-myung when he was a National Assembly member, the party decided to issue an additional call for candidates.
