Song Eon-seog, the People Power Party floor leader, on the 16th said about Democratic Party of Korea Seoul mayoral candidate Chong Won-o, "If, following the joint investigation to save Private Chun Jae-soo, a lenient probe to save Chong Won-o also becomes a reality, the police no longer have the qualifications to be an investigative agency."
That morning, at the supreme council meeting held at the National Assembly, the floor leader Song said that the police "must completely take their hands off investigations into those in power," and made the remarks.
Song said, "Following the prosecution-police joint task force's effort to save Private Chun Jae-soo, this time suspicions are being raised that the police are conducting an investigation to save Private Chong Won-o," adding, "The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has pulled up and is directly looking into Chong Won-o's complaint against our party lawmaker Kim Jae-seop that was at Dobong Police Station, while the case of Chong Won-o's distorted public release of polling results was transferred to Seongdong Police Station."
Song asked back, "Why treat them so differently," and said, "Isn't it an intention to conduct direct probes into the opposition and slow-walk probes into the ruling party? In the end, isn't it an operation to make the opposition guilty and the ruling party not guilty, like the cases of Kweon Seong-dong and Chun Jae-soo?"
He continued, "Candidate Chong fabricated a non-existent approval rating and deceived Seoul citizens," adding, "In the cases of former lawmaker Jung Bong-ju and former Yeouido Institute vice president Jang Ye-chan, the issue was cherry-picking numbers, but for candidate Chong Won-o, the issue is inventing and manipulating numbers, so the matter is far more serious."
Regarding Democratic Party Busan mayoral candidate Chun Jae-soo, floor leader Song said, "When asked whether he received a Cartier watch from the Unification Church side or not, he cannot say he did not receive it and only keeps repeating that it is an already concluded matter," adding, "I don't know if the joint task force's investigation has concluded, but the doubt in the hearts of Busan citizens is not a concluded matter."
