Jung Chung-rae of the Democratic Party of Korea met Chun Jae-soo, a Democratic Party lawmaker who was confirmed as the Busan mayoral candidate. Jung conveyed to Chun, who received dispositions of no right to prosecute and no suspicion in connection with the "Unification Church bribery allegations," that he was thankful for enduring the unfair attacks.
Chun met Jung at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 10th to discuss the Busan mayoral election in June. Jung came out to greet Chun, hugged him, and said he had worked hard. Chun placed first in the Democratic Party's primary for the Busan mayoral candidate the previous day.
After finishing the meeting with Jung, Chun told reporters that "Jung passed along deokdam, saying he was grateful for enduring malicious criticism and unfair attacks," and that "he said he had always believed in Chun Jae-soo's sincerity, and as party leader he was very pleased that such a result came out."
He added that "there was also a request to now come together as one in heart and mind and lead the Busan mayoral election to victory," and that "there was also a statement that all resources that can be mobilized would be provided to secure the Democratic Party's victory in the Busan mayoral election."
On the results of the Joint Investigation Headquarters of prosecutors and police investigating alleged collusion between religious groups and politics, Chun said, "A lot of precious time has passed. Now I can focus solely on work," and added, "To complete maritime capital Busan, together with President Lee Jae-myung, who is good at getting things done, and with Busan citizens, Chun Jae-soo will fulfill the dream of maritime capital Busan."
Earlier that day, the joint headquarters decided not to indict Chun in connection with the "Unification Church bribery allegations." The headquarters confirmed that Jung Won-ju, chief secretary to the Unification Church leader, purchased one Cartier watch worth 7.85 million won, and that an acquaintance of Chun's had the watch repaired in July 2019. The headquarters concluded "no right to prosecute," judging that the statute of limitations for the alleged offense had expired.
The headquarters also found that it was established that the Unification Church bought 500 copies of Chun's autobiography for 10 million won around Oct. 2019, but, considering the lack of evidence that Chun recognized the church's book purchase, issued a disposition of "no suspicion."
