The Democratic Party of Korea confirmed lawmaker Choo Mi-ae as its candidate for Gyeonggi governor. Choo won a majority of votes in the main primary and was elected the final candidate without a runoff. Incumbent Gyeonggi Gov. Kim Dong-yeon and lawmaker Han Jun-ho were eliminated.
On the 7th, So Byung-hoon, chair of the Democratic Party Central Election Management Committee, said, "Candidate Choo Mi-ae received the highest number of votes with a majority and is hereby declared the Democratic Party's nominee for Gyeonggi governor in the 9th nationwide local elections."
The Democratic Party held the main primary for the Gyeonggi governor candidate on the 5th to the 7th using a "50% party rights members, 50% public opinion poll" method.
Choo is a six-term lawmaker who has served as party leader and Minister of the Ministry of Justice. Until the primary, Choo chaired the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee and is seen to have gained support by leading the Democratic Party's push for "prosecution and judicial reform."
