Koo Yun-cheol, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs and Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, filed a complaint with the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency over the fake news that "the government will force the sale of dollars."
The Ministry of Economy and Finance said on the 2nd that Deputy Prime Minister Koo filed a complaint with the Gyeonggi Nambu Provincial Police Agency against the original disseminators and active participants who posted such claims on some online cafes and blogs, for violations of the Framework Act on Telecommunications, among other charges.
On the 31st, President Lee Jae-myung said at a Cabinet meeting, "If necessary, we could also use the emergency fiscal order as defined by the Constitution." An emergency fiscal and economic order is the authority for the president to issue an order with the force of law without National Assembly consent in the event of a natural disaster or a serious economic crisis. In connection with this, the Ministry of Economy and Finance judged that fake news was spreading online claiming that "the government will forcibly sell dollar asset held by the private sector," and moved to take action.
Deputy Prime Minister Koo said, "The malicious spread of fake news causes market anxiety and undermines confidence in government policy, and it cannot be tolerated."
