Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the People Power Party, on the 28th addressed the debate on alleged election fraud between Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok and YouTuber Jeon Han-gil (legal name Jeon Yu-gwan), saying it "shows the public's high interest in a fair election system."
In a post on social media (SNS) that day, Jang said, "The issue of changing the election system so the public can trust it has become an agenda that can no longer be delayed. Many people, regardless of whether the fraud allegations are true, think we must fix already exposed problems such as granting voting rights to foreigners and lax management of early voting," and stated accordingly.
Lee and Jeon held a seven-hour debate starting at 6 p.m. the previous day on a YouTube channel under the theme of the "election fraud conspiracy theory." Real-time viewership reached 300,000, and cumulative views surpassed 5 million.
Jang said, "Through this debate, I believe there is a consensus that a redesign of the election system is needed to block opportunities for election fraud to creep in and to solve problems of poor election management," adding, "Before trying to silence citizens calling for fair elections, the National Election Commission should first consider ways to restore trust in the election system."
He added, "The People Power Party will begin full-fledged discussions on overhauling the election system and will form a party-level task force so thorough election monitoring can take place in this local election."
Meanwhile, in March last year, when the impeachment trial of former President Yoon Suk-yeol was underway, Jang introduced an amendment to the Public Official Election Act centered on abolishing early voting, reviving absentee voting, and extending the main voting day, saying allegations of fraud surrounding early voting had not let up.
