A group of 105 Democratic Party of Korea lawmakers called the "Lawmakers' Group to Push for Cancellation of the Indictment in President Lee Jae-myung's Case and a National Investigation (indictment cancellation group)" began activities on the 23rd.
The indictment cancellation group held a resolution rally and launch ceremony at the National Assembly that day. Of the 105 lawmakers participating in the group, about 60 attended in person.
Lawmakers at the event held placards reading "Push for indictment cancellation immediately, push for a national investigation immediately" and "Political prosecutors OUT, fabricated indictments OUT," and chanted slogans.
Park Seong-joon, the group's standing representative, mentioned Brazil President Inácio Lula da Silva, who paid a state visit to Korea, and said, "President Lula was imprisoned for 580 days by Brazil's political prosecutors and the federal court, but returned as president by the choice of the people," adding, "The fact that he set foot on Korean soil is living proof that democracy ultimately prevails against political oppression carried out in the name of justice."
Park said, "Canceling the indictment of President Lee Jae-myung is not simply relief for a particular individual," adding, "It is about correcting prosecutorially fabricated charging authority and restoring judicial justice."
Kim Seung-won, the group's co-representative, also said, "Through a national investigation, we will lay bare the illegal fabricated indictments by political prosecutors in every detail, and we will work hard until we wipe away the tears of journalists and the public who are suffering."
The opposition criticized the indictment cancellation group. People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk said at the supreme council meeting that day, "To borrow the words of Yoo Si-min, the ruling camp's godfather, it is, in a word, crazy," adding, "The court ruled that in the (presidential) nonprosecution privilege, 'prosecution' does not include 'maintenance of prosecution' and only means 'bringing a prosecution,' and therefore investigation is possible. They used the nonprosecution privilege stipulated in the Constitution to halt the trial, but since that legal basis has disappeared, the trial must resume."
