The People Power Party on the 21st criticized the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that reciprocal tariff measures are unlawful, saying, "Now that the legal basis for reciprocal tariff has been shaken, only we are left shouldering massive investments and our negotiating leverage has been weakened."
Spokesperson Jo Yong-sul said in a commentary that "the Lee Jae-myung administration packaged its pledge of massive investment in the United States at the Korea-U.S. summit as a joint fact sheet and promoted it as a grand diplomatic achievement."
Jo said, "It is hard to avoid criticism that a negotiation in which we unilaterally revealed our hand first is not a negotiation but capitulation," adding, "Even now, the government should transparently disclose the full scope of the negotiations and give a responsible explanation before the National Assembly and the public."
Chief Spokesperson Park Sung-hoon also said in a commentary, "The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling was not a variable that suddenly fell from the sky; it was fully foreseeable," adding, "A normal government would have prepared a plan B and drawn up a response strategy that considered even the U.S. administration's alternative tariff card."
Park continued, "President Lee Jae-myung, who should explain the situation to the public, lay out the government's response direction, and reassure the market, is strangely quiet," arguing, "The president is in a state of 'despicable silence,' keeping his lips tightly sealed on matters directly tied to the national interest."
Park said, "The president must prepare practical measures and concrete plans to maximize the national interest, not engage in political games," urging, "The Democratic Party should not focus solely on the 'triple bulletproof legislation' to secure the president's acquittal, but instead take responsible steps to resolve the reality before us."
Earlier, on the 20th (local time), the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the reciprocal tariff imposed on countries around the world by U.S. President Donald Trump under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) was unlawful.
Korea previously agreed to invest $350 billion (about 505 trillion won) in the United States to reduce the tariff imposed by the United States.
