Minister Kim Jung-kwan of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources visited the Czech Republic during the Lunar New Year holiday to inspect progress on the Dukovany new nuclear power plant Units 5 and 6 construction project. The two sides also agreed to set up a ministerial-level consultative body to ensure smooth project execution with the Czech government.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) on the 18th, Minister Kim visited Prague, Czech Republic, on the 16th (local time) at the invitation of the Czech government. Minister Kim met with new Prime Minister Andrej Babis, who took office in December last year, and Minister of Industry Karel Havlíček. Minister Kim conveyed President Lee Jae-myung's congratulations on Babis' inauguration and his warm regards, and delivered a personal letter from President Lee.
Minister Kim said, "We will spare no effort to ensure the successful construction of the Dukovany nuclear power plant," and added, "We hope to strengthen the cooperation framework between the two countries and work together at Temelín as well, following Dukovany."
Minister Kim and Minister Havlíček agreed to establish a ministerial-level consultative body for the nuclear power project. It will be held three to four times a year by video or in person, and the president of EDUⅡ and the head of supplier KHNP are also expected to participate.
During this visit to the Czech Republic, two subcontract signing ceremonies were also held between Korea's corporations and Czech corporations, including a turbine supply contract between Doosan Enerbility and Doosan Škoda Power.
Minister Kim said, "The new Dukovany nuclear power plant project in the Czech Republic goes beyond a simple infrastructure project and will be a symbol of strong solidarity and cooperation between the two governments and between corporations for decades to come," adding, "Following the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), it will be another opportunity to prove the competitiveness of Korea's nuclear power plant construction to the world."
