At about 11:04 a.m. on the 9th, an Army helicopter (AH-1S) crashed in the area of Jojong-myeon, Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province, killing both of the two people on board.
The Army said that a Cobra helicopter undergoing emergency procedure training crashed for reasons unknown. Emergency procedure training refers to flight training that conducts an emergency landing in a situation similar to an abnormal state without shutting down the engine.
Two warrant officers from a battalion under the Army 15th Aviation Brigade who were on the helicopter were rushed to a civilian hospital after the crash, but both were found dead.
After the accident, the Army grounded all Cobra helicopters in its fleet.
The Army has set up an accident countermeasure headquarters led by Acting Deputy Chief of Staff Ha Heon-cheol (chief of logistics) at Army Headquarters to determine the cause of the crash.
Meanwhile, Minister Ahn Gyu-baek of the Ministry of National Defense, who is visiting Saudi Arabia, received a briefing on the accident on site and ordered thorough follow-up measures.
