Next year's teacher training enrollment is expected to decrease by more than 3,000. Among teacher training tracks, three institutions — Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Hanyang University ERICA, and Hyupsung University — received the lowest grade in the capacity assessment and will be abolished.
On Feb. 5, the Ministry of Education and the Korean Educational Development Institute (KEDI) announced the final results of the "2025 teacher training institution capacity assessment." The assessment covered a total of 139 universities, including those with and without colleges of education.
Based on these results, the teacher training enrollment for the 2027 academic year at the relevant institutions will be adjusted. At 94 institutions with a C grade, enrollment will be cut by 30%. At 33 institutions with a D grade, enrollment will be cut by 50%. At three institutions with an E grade, the teacher training function has been abolished.
The scale of the cuts is about 800 in general university education departments, about 900 in teacher training tracks, and about 1,200 in graduate schools of education. For teacher training tracks, the changes will apply in 2028, when students admitted in 2027 enter the track.
Forty-five colleges of education nationwide and one education university received A or B grades, keeping their enrollment unchanged. Among general university education departments (89), most received A or B grades, but four received a C grade and will cut enrollment by 30%. Among general university teacher training tracks (115), 63% (72 institutions) will see enrollment cuts or program abolitions. Among 65 graduate schools of education, 27 (44%) received a C grade and two (3%) received a D grade. Yonsei University Mirae Campus, Hanyang University ERICA, and Hyupsung University received an E grade and will be abolished.
