As registrations of eco-friendly vehicles such as electric cars increased, the total cumulative number of registered cars rose by more than 200,000 in a year.
On the 29th, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced that the cumulative number of registered cars as of the end of last year was 26,515,000. This is an increase of 217,000 (0.8%) from the end of 2024 (26,298,000).
As a result, 3,494,000 eco-friendly vehicles have been cumulatively registered. That is an increase of 747,000 from the previous year (2,747,000). Of these, hybrid cars account for 526,000, electric cars 215,000, and hydrogen cars 6,000.
In contrast, internal combustion engine vehicles decreased by 529,000 during the same period. The cumulative number of registered internal combustion engine vehicles is 22,841,000. In particular, diesel cars fell by 496,000, leading the decline in internal combustion engine vehicles.
Bae So-myeong, head of the automobile operation and insurance division at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT), said, "While internal combustion engine vehicles are on the decline, eco-friendly vehicles continue to increase," and noted, "The share of newly registered electric vehicles has risen sharply."
