People Power Party floor leader Song Eon-seog on the 20th proposed accepting a special counsel probe into Shincheonji and pushing a separate special counsel into the Unification Church.
At an afternoon background briefing at the National Assembly, the floor leader said, "What People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok is arguing for, even while fasting, is to accept a special counsel into the Democratic Party of Korea's nomination bribery case and a special counsel into the Unification Church gate," and stated accordingly.
He said, "The Democratic Party is trying to muddy the waters with Shincheonji, but we are not saying we should not do a Shincheonji special counsel," adding, "Even just the allegations of cash-for-favors related to the Unification Church make the special counsel's scope vast and complex. The Unification Church special counsel should focus on the Unification Church, and the Shincheonji special counsel should proceed as a separate special counsel to uncover the substantive truth through an in-depth investigation. That is our party's proposal."
He went on, "Some media reports suggested our party lawmakers had cozy ties with Shincheonji. So there are claims that the People Power Party is trying to dodge it, but not at all," stressing, "Let's do the Shincheonji special counsel too. As a separate special counsel, the Unification Church special counsel must also be carried out."
The floor leader singled out the Democratic Party nomination bribery allegations as "the most important special counsel matter," and said, "Through three rounds of questioning of Seoul City Council member Kim Kyung, it appears statements have been secured to some extent. In investigative technique, in a bribery case, it is basic among basics to summon accomplices at different times, and if their statements conflict, to focus the investigation."
He continued, "While summoning City Council member Kim Kyung for questioning, only today did they question Rep. Kang Sun-woo," and argued, "Publicly disclosing Kim Kyung's statements to the whole world, letting them coordinate their stories and giving time to prepare a response is proof of incompetence."
