Kim Dong-myung, Chairperson of the Federation of Korean Trade Unions, was elected as the 29th chairperson, winning a third consecutive term.
The Federation of Korean Trade Unions said on the 20th afternoon that, according to the results of the election for the 29th Chairperson and secretary-general, incumbent Chairperson Kim Dong-myung and incumbent secretary-general Ryu Gi-seop were elected. Both candidates ran unopposed.
The election was held online from 9 a.m. on the 19th to 3 p.m. on the day. Of the 4,332 electors, 3,760 voted, for a turnout of 86.8%. The Kim Dong-myung–Ryu Gi-seop ticket won 3,526 votes and was elected with 93.78% of the vote. Their term is three years.
With this, Chairperson Kim will serve as the 29th chairperson following the 27th and 28th, becoming the first chairperson to win three consecutive terms since the elector system was introduced at the Federation of Korean Trade Unions in 2005.
Immediately after the victory, the Chairperson said, "Being a three-term chairperson does not mean relying on inertia or doing things the same way," adding, "We will push for strong organizational reforms."
He continued, "We will make sure to carry out the policy agreement signed with the government," and "On key tasks such as extending the retirement age, we once again strongly demand here that the government show responsibility."
In this election, the Chairperson put forward as key pledges the introduction of a 4.5-day workweek, resolving long working hours, legislating a retirement age of 65, guaranteeing basic political rights for public officials and teachers, establishing a labor-government bargaining framework, and preparing measures to prevent overwork deaths among delivery workers.
The Chairperson has served three terms as chairperson of the Federation of Korean Chemical Workers' Unions, and secretary-general Ryu is a former chairperson of the Federation of Korean Public Service Workers' Unions.
