On the 15th, Democratic Party of Korea floor spokesperson Kim Hyun-jung assessed People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok's hunger strike, saying, "From our party's perspective, I think it is a political show aimed at silencing criticism that they will not carry out a special counsel probe into the Unification Church."
After the caucus ended that afternoon, floor spokesperson Kim met with reporters and, asked about Jang's indefinite hunger strike, said, "The core of the Unification Church special counsel is church-state collusion, and allegations related to church-state collusion regarding Shincheonji were raised by former People Power Party leader Hong Joon-pyo," adding, "We accepted the stance that, of course, the Unification Church and Shincheonji should be investigated together by a special counsel, but negotiations broke down because the People Power Party said Shincheonji should be excluded."
Kim said, "We do not know why Shincheonji should be excluded," adding, "From our party's perspective, staging a hunger strike over this seems like a political show aimed at silencing criticism that they will not carry out a special counsel probe into the Unification Church."
Regarding Jang's demand that the party accept a special counsel probe into alleged nomination bribery donations by the Democratic Party, Kim said, "Police are investigating quickly," adding, "Our basic position is to wait and see the police investigation."
Kim said, "The People Power Party also faces allegations related to nomination donations," adding, "There were actually far more allegations involving the People Power Party, and unless they propose including those as well, calling for a special counsel now, while police are currently investigating quickly, is nothing more than political grandstanding."
