Last year, Korea's automobile exports reached $72 billion, setting a new all-time high. The increase was driven largely by a sharp rise in hybrid and used-car exports.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on the 15th, total automobile exports in 2025 came to $72 billion, surpassing the previous record high of $70.9 billion in 2023. Automobile exports have exceeded $70 billion for three consecutive years since 2023.

In particular, eco-friendly vehicle exports were strong. Last year, exports of eco-friendly vehicles totaled $25.8 billion, up 11% from a year earlier. Of that, hybrid vehicle exports rose 30% to $14.8 billion, marking an all-time high.

Used-car exports also surged. Last year, used-car exports reached $8.87 billion, up 75.1% from a year earlier, hitting a record high. Analysts said improved recognition of Korean-made vehicles and a weak won played a role.

Domestic automobile production fell 0.6% on-year to 4.1 million units but stayed above 4 million units for a third straight year. A total of 2.74 million units, or 67% of vehicles produced, were exported.

Domestic sales showed signs of recovery. Last year, new car sales in Korea rose 3.3% on-year to 1.68 million units. Of these, eco-friendly vehicle sales climbed 25% to 813,000 units, accounting for 48% of total sales. Electric vehicle sales jumped 52% in one year to 216,000 units.

However, automobile exports in December last year stood at $5.95 billion, down 1.5% from the same month a year earlier. The decline is attributed to a base effect from strong results the previous year.

An official at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MOTI) said, "There were risks such as U.S. tariff imposition, but uncertainty eased with government measures and the conclusion of tariff negotiations, allowing us to achieve the largest performance ever," adding, "This year, we will bolster competitiveness in future vehicles to strengthen export momentum."
