People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk and Reform Party leader Lee Jun-seok on the 13th visited National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik and urged him not to put to a vote the second omnibus special counsel bill being pushed by the Democratic Party of Korea.
After meeting Speaker Woo that afternoon, Jang and Lee told reporters that if the second omnibus special counsel bill is placed on the agenda at the plenary session on the 15th, they will have no choice but to use a stronger method than a filibuster (a lawful obstruction of proceedings through unlimited debate). In political circles, there is speculation that Jang and Lee could go on a hunger strike together.
Jang said, "As the opposition, we absolutely cannot agree to putting only the second omnibus special counsel bill pushed by the Democratic Party on the agenda on the 15th," adding, "We asked the speaker not to put the omnibus special counsel bill on the agenda on the 15th."
Jang added, "The second omnibus special counsel bill is one that even the National Court Administration has expressed concern about," and "We can fully discuss a special counsel on the Unification Church."
Lee also said, "The second omnibus special counsel is in itself contradictory in some respects," and "When creating an ad hoc body by law, the legislature needs a process of deliberation until the public understands these aspects." Lee said, "In the case of a special counsel on the Unification Church, I find it puzzling that discourse about Shincheonji suddenly emerged, wondering if it is an attempt to muddy the waters."
Jang said, "Once only the bills pushed by the Democratic Party are passed, the Democratic Party will have no reason to hurry the Unification Church special counsel," adding, "If the Assembly is run like this, we will have no choice but to continue a filibuster, and if that doesn't work, we told the speaker we would have no choice but to seek even stronger methods."
