The Democratic Party of Korea on the 13th called it "justice prevails" after the special counsel investigating the insurrection case sought the death penalty against former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who is accused of being the ringleader of an insurrection, and said the judiciary should render a decision that meets the public's expectations.
Jung Chung-rae wrote "justice prevails" on Facebook the same day, then said, "Neither the court of history nor the court of law will forgive insurrection. Like Chun Doo-hwan."
Democratic Party chief spokesperson Park Soo-hyun also said in a commentary that the death penalty request by the special counsel was "a declaration to hold to the most severe responsibility prescribed by law for an act that sought to destroy the constitutional order and overturn popular sovereignty by force." He added it was "a common-sense conclusion that aligns with public common sense and expectations," and said, "Now only the judiciary's decision remains."
Park also stressed, "In the face of the destruction of constitutional governance, it must be made clear in the name of the judiciary that there can be no tolerance or exceptions," adding, "There must be no hesitation in condemning a criminal of history." He added, "The Democratic Party will watch to the end to ensure the trial's conclusion returns to justice that meets the public's expectations."
The Rebuilding Korea Party also issued a commentary the same day supporting the death penalty request. Floor spokesperson Baek Sun-hee said, "Yoon Suk-yeol's culpability is far heavier and more vicious than Chun Doo-hwan, who launched a military coup," adding, "The death penalty request is the sovereign's stern demand to set the rule of law straight and the natural conclusion."
Baek added, "The court must hand down a ruling at the earliest possible date without delay," and, "In accordance only with the Constitution, the law, and judicial conscience, it must reestablish Korea's rule of law through a grave ruling that permanently isolates the insurrection ringleader from society and holds them accountable."
