President Lee Jae-myung on the 30th said, "We cannot wait only for a special counsel on the Unification Church and Shincheonji cases, so please have the police and prosecutors form a joint investigation team." At a Cabinet meeting that day, Lee said, "Even if a special counsel is launched (on the Unification Church and Shincheonji cases), the police and prosecutors will not refrain from preparing for investigations," adding the above. Lee also said, "Regardless of whether it is the ruling party or the opposition, no matter who they are or their rank, the cases must be fully investigated to get to the bottom of the truth and hold those responsible to account, so that this never happens again."
In response, Minister of the Interior and Safety Yoon Ho-jung said, "The three special counsels have concluded, so materials related to the investigations that were left incomplete have been transferred to the National Office of Investigation under the Korean National Police Agency, and we created three separate teams to investigate based on the materials handed over to each special counsel," adding that they are "currently investigating."
Lee then said, "These Unification Church and Shincheonji cases violate the constitutional principle of separation of religion and state, and in terms of religion intervening in politics, bribing, and colluding, they are grave matters that threaten the future of democracy in our society and the future of the nation." Lee continued, "It would be best for the police and prosecutors to consult and form teams so that, if a special counsel is formed after the police-prosecutor joint investigation team conducts the initial probe, the case can be handed over."
On this, Minister of Justice Jung Sung-ho answered, "Because collusion between religion and politics is a grave matter, we will discuss (forming a joint investigation team between the police and prosecutors)."
