Choi Min-hee of the Democratic Party of Korea, who chairs the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee, said on the 29th that a plan billed as compensation was rolled out to induce spending on its own platform, calling it a "voucher release plan."
Choi said on Facebook that day, "What on earth are Coupang Travel and R.LUX? I learned about them for the first time this time," and added, "Coupang is dodging responsibility and even trying to profit off the crisis. How far will it go?"
She continued, "Bundling coupons with a service nobody uses is like covering one's eyes and pretending," and said, "Are they running a sales promotion in the middle of this? Is this hustling for an unsold service?"
Coupang on the day announced a compensation plan related to the massive personal data breach affecting 33.7 million people, offering a voucher worth 50,000 won per affected customer. The voucher will be split into four purchase credits: 5,000 won for all Coupang products, 5,000 won for Coupang Eats, 20,000 won for Coupang Travel products, and 20,000 won for R.LUX products.
Choi also said a written statement explaining his absence submitted by Kim Beom-suk, chair of Coupang Inc, for the National Assembly joint hearing set for the 30th–31st is inappropriate. She characterized the apology Kim released as "meant to water down his absence from the hearing."
Appearing on MBC radio that day, Choi said, "I think (Kim's apology) was issued to dilute criticism to avoid appearing as a witness before the National Assembly hearing," and added, "How many people will take this situation as 'a sincere apology'?"
She went on, "If (Kim) is publicly subjected to pointed questioning from lawmakers, there may be a judgment that, in his view, he could make a mistake," and said, "If he does not show up at this joint hearing, we will file a complaint immediately. The People Power Party has no objection on this point."
