The Democratic Party of Korea criticized as political attacks People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok's assessment that the party's special counsel bill on the Unification Church was "muddying the waters."
Park Su-hyeon, the Democratic Party's senior spokesperson, said in a written briefing on the 28th, "Leader Jang is deceiving the public yet again with sophistry and agitation," adding, "We are appalled by the shamelessness of the People Power Party, which is distorting matters to make it seem as if the Democratic Party opposes a special counsel and is mounting political attacks."
Park went on to say, "If the ruling and opposition parties engage in good-faith talks, the Unification Church special counsel can be handled immediately," adding, "The very act of branding it as muddying the waters by the People Power Party is proof that there is no sincerity about a special counsel."
Park also said, "Shouldn't we use this opportunity to root out collusion between religion and politics?" and argued that the Unification Church special counsel should investigate allegations of money and valuables linked to Shincheonji and suspicions of organized election interference.
Kim Hyun-jung, the party's floor spokesperson, also said in a briefing, "Under the People Power Party's special counsel bill as well, if the National Court Administration chief recommends two candidates, the final appointment is made by the president," and asked, "On what basis do you conclude that only the Democratic Party bill is under the administration's influence?"
She added, "In the end, it only looks like you're nitpicking because you don't want a special counsel. Is the People Power Party afraid now that it actually has to conduct a Unification Church special counsel?" and said, "Stop quibbling and let's do the special counsel."
