People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok said he would file a constitutional complaint against the bill to establish a special panel for insurrection cases, which passed the National Assembly's plenary session under the leadership of the Democratic Party of Korea. He argued that the independent counsel bill on the Unification Church, which would uncover alleged cash-for-favors involving political figures, must pass the plenary session on the 30th.
At a press briefing held at the National Assembly on the morning of the 28th, Jang said, "A special court without constitutional basis that infringes on judicial independence is clearly unconstitutional," adding, "The People Power Party will file a constitutional complaint against the bill to establish a special court for fomenting an insurrection narrative."
He went on, "A special court like those seen under Nazi Germany has been passed in 21st-century Korea. They (the Democratic Party) want to assign cases to judges they prefer to get the rulings they want," adding, "The Democratic Party is forcing this bill through because they fear their false insurrection narrative will be exposed, and they will somehow manufacture guilty verdicts to dismantle the People Power Party."
Jang also said, "If President Lee Jae-myung has the will to uphold the Constitution, he must exercise the power to request reconsideration of the bill to establish an insurrection special court," adding, "The ultimate goal of the special court is the dissolution of the People Power Party. The People Power Party will step up and fight directly."
Regarding the Unification Church independent counsel bill, he said the Democratic Party has entered into a "delay tactic." He opposed an investigation into Independent Counsel Min Joong-ki and criticized the Democratic Party, which inserted an investigation of Shincheonji into the independent counsel bill, as "out of the blue."
Jang said, "The Democratic Party also introduced an independent counsel bill on the Unification Church, but in reality it is a smokescreen to block our opposition's independent counsel bill," adding, "The Unification Church independent counsel bill jointly introduced by the People Power Party and the Reform Party must pass the plenary session on the 30th."
He continued, "There was testimony that the Unification Church gave money to politicians in the Lee Jae-myung administration and that they collectively joined the Democratic Party as members, yet Independent Counsel Min Joong-ki turned a blind eye and covered this up," adding, "Why are they so hell-bent on blocking an investigation into Independent Counsel Min Joong-ki? Why suddenly push for an investigation into Shincheonji?"
